Star India batter, Smriti Mandhana is not likely to take part in the 2023 season of the Women’s Big Bash League and won’t be a part of the upcoming draft as the player decided to focus on the Indian domestic season which will clash with the WBBL 2023 season.

According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, a total of 122 players have been named in the overseas draft for the upcoming WBBL 2023 season. The tournament will start on October 19th and the first match will be played between Sydney Sixers Women and Melbourne Stars at North Sydney Oval in Sydney.

Women’s Big Bash League’s final match will take place on December 2nd and will be played at Sydney Cricket Ground.

With the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy, the Indian domestic season will start from October 19th. The Senior Women’s Inter-Zonal Trophy is scheduled to be the next tournament of the domestic season. The season will end with the Senior Women’s One-Day Trophy which will take place from January 4th, 2024 till January 26th, 2024.

Even last year, the 27-year-old decided to not take part in the WBBL 2022 to take some rest and get ready for the international matches for the Indian cricket team.

However, Smriti Mandhana decided to take part in The Hundred Women 2023 for the Southern Brave Women and won the tournament after beating Northern Superchargers Women by 34 runs.

Mandhana took part in the WBBL only for three seasons with Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, and Sydney Thunder. The 27-year-old is mostly known for being the skipper of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023.

Smriti Mandhana last played for India in the last match of the three-game series against Bangladesh where she scored 59 runs from 85 balls. However, the match and series both were tied.

WBBL 2021 season kicked off on Thursday with the match between Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Stars in Hobart.

This weekend’s WBBL fixtures southern Tasmania went into a three-day lockdown on Friday.

Crowds won’t be allowed to enter in the matches held in the state of Tasmania.

WBBL matches will go ahead in Tasmania without crowd: Peter Gutwein

According to a report by cricket.com.au, four WBBL-07 games are scheduled to be played at Blundstone Arena (in Hobart) across Saturday and Sunday, with Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein suggesting crowds will now not be able to attend those matches.

Cricket Australia and the Tasmanian state government are working through contingency plans, with CA emphasising all players and staff have received COVID-19 vaccinations.

“Bearing in mind there are national and international matters to consider here in terms of the broadcast, if they do go ahead they would go ahead with no crowd and with the players remaining in a bubble,” Gutwein mentioned in his press conference.

Seven of the eight WBBL clubs are in Tasmania. Perth Scorchers were scheduled to fly on Friday for their first match against Brisbane Heat on Sunday but confirmed they would remain in Western Australia until more information was available.

Hobart Hurricanes are scheduled to play the Renegades on Saturday afternoon, before Adelaide Strikers face Sydney Thunder on Saturday night.

The Hurricanes then back up against the Sixers on Sunday morning, before the Heat play the Scorchers.

Cricket Australia said that the safety and health of the players is their top most priority.

“The health and safety of our players, staff, match officials and partners, along with that of the wider community, remains our top priority,” CA said in a statement.

“We are currently working with the Tasmanian Government on options for the upcoming Weber WBBL 07 matches at Blundstone Arena, Hobart this weekend,” the statement further read.

Sydney Sixers won the opening match of WBBL 2021 in a match that was reduced to 11 overs per innings.

Australian franchise Brisbane Heat on Friday signed Indian leg-spinner Poonam Yadav for the upcoming Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2021 season.

This season, the 30-year-old player from Agra becomes the eighth Indian player to sign for a WBBL franchise, which is the most number of representations by any team for overseas players.

Yadav, who is currently the eighth-ranked bowler in the ICC T20 International rankings, is present with the Indian women’s team in Australia, playing in the three-match T20I series.

She will link with the Heat squad in Hobart early next week, with the Brisbane-based players travelling to Tasmania today to begin their preparations.

Poonam will also be very good for the younger players in the squad: Ashley Noffke

Brisbane Heat women’s head coach Ashley Noffke said that Poonam’s inclusion has covered up the void New Zealand leg-spinner Amelia Kerr left. Noffke also mentioned that Heat skipper Jess Jonassen is keen to work with the Indian spinner.

“It’s very exciting to welcome a player of her class and experience into our group. We know there is a lot of upside to Poonam coming on board this summer,” Noffke said.

“When we lost Amelia Kerr, we were confident we could back our group to give a good account of themselves regardless. But adding Poonam’s skill and her competitiveness is a huge result. She is a different type of bowler to Melie, and we are clear on how we can best utilise her talents in our line-up. Jess Jonassen has played against her, and as captain, she is very keen to work alongside her now she is with the Heat.

“We think Poonam will also be very good for the younger players in the squad. She has demonstrated her composure on the biggest stage in the world at the MCG and played cricket at a high level in a number of countries,” he added.

Poonam Yadav has picked 98 wickets in 71 T20 International matches at an economy rate of 5.70 and has scalped four-wicket hauls in the shortest format on three occasions.

Sydney Sixers have signed India women’s team prodigies Shafali Verma and Radha Yadav for the upcoming WBBL season next month, the franchise announced on Monday.

Shafali Verma has revealed herself as a sensational and talented batter since she broke into the Indian women’s team in 2019 and also displayed her batting prowess by scoring 163 runs from five innings.

I want to play WBBL and back myself: Shafali Verma

Verma, who is currently ranked as the no.1 T20I batter in the ICC rankings, said that she finds it a good opportunity to make new friends and have fun.

“This is a very good opportunity for me, and my goal is just to enjoy myself, to make some new friends and have fun. I want to play WBBL and back myself and just believe in myself,” Verma said, as reported by Cricbuzz.

I am so happy to be able to play for the Sixers this year: Radha Yadav

Yadav, who is currently with the Indian women’s team in Australia, said that she is happy to join Sydney Sixers.

“Lots of young Indian girls want to play in the WBBL. It is a very good standard, and I am so happy to be able to play for the Sixers this year,” Yadav said.

Sydney Sixers head coach Ben Sawyer has already worked with Shafali Verma in the inaugural edition of The Hundred. Sawyer said that Verma has many shots in her repertoire, and her desire to keep learning makes her different.

Sawyer also said that Radha Yadav brings some different skillset and a left-arm spinner is something he was looking to fill up the space in the team.

“She hits to different areas of the field and plays shots that are different to the other three girls in that top four. The experience I had with her in Birmingham was that she wants to learn, she wants to get better, and she wants to grow as a player and a person,” Sawyer said.

“Radha brings a skill set that we have never had at the Sixers, and that’s very exciting. I think a left-arm orthodox bowler is so important in the WBBL and having a world-class one is such a great opportunity for this team. She has also batted in the middle of the order for India, so she is handy with the bat too,” he added.

Earlier, Sydney Thunder signed Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma for the new season of WBBL 2021.

Reigning champions Sydney Thunder have signed Indian players Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma for the next edition of the Women’s Big Bash League.

This will be the third successive season for the left-handed opening batter after playing for Brisbane Heat and Hobart Hurricanes in the last two seasons. Mandhana has scored 407 runs from 25 WBBL matches across two seasons and has a couple of fifties next to her name.

“Playing in overseas leagues gives you a lot of experience, especially in the T20 format. Then, of course, you exchange so much experience with each other . . . with all the players from over the world . . . so you get to learn a lot,” Mandhana was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

“Rather than ‘pressure’, I always look at it as an opportunity to learn, and to get used to that pressure because it only builds when you play international cricket,” Mandhana further added.

Deepti Sharma thinks it is a big opportunity to play in WBBL

The 24-year-old bowling all-rounder Deepti Sharma, who played for Lond Spirits in the Women’s Hundred, will make her maiden appearance in Australia’s elite T20 competition for women.

“This is my first time [in the WBBL], so I’m excited. I’ve had offers before, but I couldn’t play at the time because at the time we had [an international] series,” Deepti asserted.

“It’s a big thing for Indian women’s cricket that we have the opportunity to play in the WBBL. We have to express ourselves in the competition,” she added.

Smriti Mandhana-Deepti Sharma replace England players in the Sydney Thunder squad

Mandhana and Deepti are the replacements for England players Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont, who remain unavailable for the upcoming WBBL season.

Sydney Thunder women’s team head coach Trevor Griffin said that the Indian duo were the apt replacements for England‘s outgoing players and called Deepti a match-winner.

“While it’s disappointing not to be able to have Heather back, if you could choose any replacement for her it would be Deepti – she’s also a star. She offers a lot with the bat – Deepti is a match-winner – and she also has the talent to bowl in the powerplay, during the middle of a match, or at the death,” Griffin said.

“Smriti is an opening batter who has the tremendous ability to take everything in her stride. I like that she keeps her game really simple; she just wants to score runs. I’m delighted to have her on board, and I have no doubt that she’ll prove to be a great addition to Thunder,” he added.

India’s T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur was part of the Sydney Thunder women’s team before she missed the previous season as the WBBL clashed with India’s Women’s T20 Challenge.

Harmanpreet played a total of 35 matches across three seasons for the Sydney Thunder, she amassed 713 runs at the strike rate of 116.89 and scalped 12 wickets at an economy of 7.53 in WBBL.

The WBBL 2021 season will commence on October 14 with Sydney Sixers women taking on Melbourne Stars women at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart.

Sunday (November 22) was a special day for Australia star Alyssa Healy. The 30-year-old scored a stunning century to power Sydney Sixers to a fine win over Melbourne Stars at the North Sydney Oval in the ongoing Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).

Alyssa Healy smashed the fourth-fastest century in the history of the WBBL, reaching her hundred from just 48 balls. She was eventually dismissed via a run out after scoring 111 from 52 balls with the help of 15 fours and 5 sixes.

The wicketkeeper-batter was just three runs short of the all-time highest score of 114 runs. She is now the owner of four of the five highest scores in the WBBL after scoring four centuries in the tournament. She came out all guns blazing as Sixers needed something special to progress ahead.

The Sixers needed to chase the Melbourne Stars’ innings of 178 from 19 overs in order to make it to the finals. Alyssa Healy and Ellyse Perry fired on all cylinders and guided their team to 150 for no loss in the 15th over before the latter’s dismissal resulted in a top order collapse. In the next ten deliveries, the Sixers lost 4 wickets for six runs.

They failed to chase down the total inside 19 overs and eventually crossed the line with two balls to spare. It wasn’t enough for the Sixers to jump the Scorchers into fourth spot.

As far as Healy is concerned, the day was special for her on a personal note. She not only scored a stunning century but did it in front of her husband and Australia men team’s pace spearhead Mitchell Starc. The pacer was seen applauding his better half after she touched the 100-run mark.

Here is the clip showing Mitchell Starc applauding Alyssa Healy:

A number of overseas stars have expressed their disappointment over the timing of this year’s Women’s T20 Challenge. Popularly called women’s IPL, the competition will take place alongside the IPL’s playoffs stage in the UAE.

And while the news might have delighted the Indian women cricketers but it has not impressed some star players from other countries. The reason for their disappointment is that the Women’s T20 Challenge will clash with the Women’s Big Bash League which is scheduled from 17 October to 29 November.

“Women’s T20 Challenge will also take place in the UAE and will comprise three teams with four matches to be played during the IPL Playoff week,” the statement from the IPL GC read. “A meeting with the franchises will be called shortly.”

Stars unimpressed with Women’s T20 Challenge schedule:

Australia star Alyssa Healy was the first one who expressed her reservations over the tournament. Taking a sarcastic dig at the timing of the competition, Healy tweeted:

“So during the WBBL…. cool. So the Indian players who’ve already signed WBBL contracts will do what? And all the international marquee players that will be in Australia for WBBL? Good luck with it.”

From India, Hamranpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Jemima Rodrigues and Shafali Verma were looking set to fly to Australia for the Big Bash League. However, the chances of their participation in the tournament is all but over now.

Rachael Haynes soon joined the discussion and called the timing of Women’s T20 Challenge ‘a shame’.

“If true, it’s a shame,” said Haynes in a tweet. “While the game continues to grow, premier domestic competitions do not need to compete against each other. They can be used to showcase the game and support its development around the world.”

New Zealand cricketer Suzie Bates too made her displeasure felt, as she tweeted:

“What a huge shame for both the WBBL and WIPL competitions there is a clash.”

On the other hand, England’s Charlotte Edwards stressed on the importance of having a window for all the women’s tournaments, tweeting:

“Needs to be a window for Women’s IPL, WBBL and The Hundred. All play a massive part in raising the standards and growing the game.”

Following Glenn Maxwell and Sana Mir, the latest international cricketer to take a break from the game is Australia’s Sophie Molineux. The brilliant all-rounder of Australian Women Cricket Team has announced her break from the game for an unspecified time. It means that the all-rounder will miss the upcoming Women’s Big Bash League fixture against the Melbourne Stars on Saturday.

Before her, Glenn Maxwell, Will Pucovski and Nic Maddinson are the other Australian cricketers in the recent past to take the break from the game. She cited Mental Health issues as the reason behind her break from cricket. Cricket Australia immediately accepted the request and assigned a staff to deal with the issues of the all-rounder.

Molineux has played all 10 games of the Renegades WBBL games so far this season, as she was pushing to return to the national side ahead of the T20 World Cup. But she has withdrawn from Saturday’s Melbourne derby against the Stars at Eastern Oval in Ballarat in order to focus on her mental health and wellbeing.

We are proud of the brave decision made by Sophie Molineux –

Speaking on the matter, Australia Women’s Team Doctor Pip Inge stated her concern on the growing issue of mental health and said that the wellbeing of cricketers was always the priority for the Board and the players were brave enough to make their issues public.

“Sophie has made the decision to take a break from cricket and we are providing her with the support she needs,” Australia Women’s Team Doctor Pip Inge said. “The welfare of our players is a priority and we are proud of the brave decision by Sophie to step away from the game.”

Melbourne Renegades have replaced Sophie Molineux with Makinley Blows in their squad for their next game against Melbourne Stars on Saturday. Surely, the latest rise of concern for the Australian players will make Cricket Australia bring new measures in order to counter the issue.

Cricket Australia (CA) has banned Hobart Hurricanes wicketkeeper Emily Smith after she breached their stringent anti-corruption policy with a social media post. As a result, she will take no part in the ongoing Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) and the subsequent Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) for her side Hobart Hurricanes.

Smith accepted the sanction for breaching Article 2.3.2 of the anti-corruption code and is ineligible to participate in any form of cricket for one year, with nine months of those suspended. Cricket Australia’s Head of Integrity and Security Sean Carroll said while Emily Smith did not intend to breach the code, players were well aware of their obligations beforehand.

The wicket-keeper shared a video to her personal Instagram account taken from within the restricted Player and Match Official Area (PMOA) of West Park in Burnie on November 2. It included the playing XI of Hobart Hurricanes for their match against Sydney Thunder. Emily Smith posted the video about an hour before the scheduled start of play, a statement from CA confirmed. However, the match was washed out without a ball bowled and no coin toss was possible.

The 24-year-old Eily Smith returned to the Hobart Hurricanes for WBBL 2019-20 after two seasons playing with the Perth Scorchers. Sean Carroll further added that they are constantly in touch with the cricketer and she now understands the mistakes committed by her; although, it was not intentional. She also believes this will work as a reminder to the other players about the anti-corruption code.

“We have been working with Emily throughout the process and Emily now understands the mistake she made. Unfortunately, in this instance, Emily’s actions breached the Anti-Corruption Code. We hope this serves as reminder to all that the Anti-Corruption Code is critical to protecting the integrity of the game,” she said.

Adelaide Strikers were looking set to finish well below 150-run mark against Melbourne Stars on Sunday. They were 134 for 4 with just five balls remaining. However, Sophie Devine had some other plans. The New Zealand hit sixes on all the remaining five deliveries to help Adelaide Strikers post a big total of 164 for 4.

Those five sixes off as many balls also helped her jump to 85 off 56 balls from 55 off 51 balls in a blink of an eye. On the other hand, 18-year-old Stars leg-spinner Madeline Penna was at the receiving end of that stunning onslaught. Prior to conceding those five sixes, Penna had impressive figures of 3 for 17 from three overs.

What makes Sophie Devine’s display even more special is the fact that most of her teammates were struggling to get going against the Stars. Her compatriot Suzie Bates managed 36 off 30 while Tahlia McGrath also laboured to 19 from 16 and Devine herself was looking set to finish in a similar manner before she decided to go for the kill.

Here is a clip showing Sophie Devine’s five consecutive sixes:

Adelaide Strikers, meanwhile, went on to win the game by 17 runs with those five sixes eventually making the difference. The Stars lost captain Elyse Villani (1) early before South African pair Mignon du Preez and Lizelle Lee put the chase on track. However, once Lee departed after scoring 52 from 41, Stars lost their way.

And when Du Preez was out for a 51-ball 70, the game all but ended. From 115 for 1, the Stars eventually collapsed to finish on 147 for 8. Leg-spinner Amanda-Jade Wellington was the pick of the bowlers, picking up 3 for 31 while Devine impressed with the ball too, taking 2 for just 19 from four overs.

Australian leg spinner Amanda Jade-Wellington was pleasantly surprised after her side Adelaide Strikers beat Melbourne Renegades on Saturday.  Amanda Jade-Wellington was surprised by her boyfriend while she was celebrating the win. Her boyfriend went down on his knees to propose her for marriage and she accepted it.

The moment was as emotional as it could get as her teammates cheered her on.  According to a report in adelaidenow.com.au, Wellington said she had no idea about what her boyfriend was going to do. She was clueless when Tayler McKechnie first appeared during the team celebration.

“When I saw him on the field, I just thought: ‘Get off, we’re trying to take a team photo’. I had no idea what was really happening, but I’m so happy, I’m still shaking,” Wellington was quoted as saying by adelaidenow.com.au.

The report also said that, McKechnie, 23, proposed using a Pokemon card with the words: “Will you marry me?” written on it, with the ring sitting in a ‘poke ball’.

Here is a clip of the beautiful moment:

Wellington has played one Test, 12 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and eight Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) for Australia. She has 27 international wickets to her name.

Talking about the game, Adelaide Strikers made light work of Melbourne Renegades. The Adelaide-based outfit won the game comfortably by six wickets. Asked to bat first, the Renegades finished their innings on a modest 117 for 7 in the allotted 20 overs. Skipper Jessica Duffin was the top-scorer with 44.

In reply, Adelaide Strikers chased down the total inside 16 overs. Opener Sophie Devine starred with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 72 to take her team over the line with ease.
